(Estrasburgo, 1832 - París, 1883) pintor, escultor e ilustrador francés, está considerado internacionalmente como uno de los grandes y famosos ilustradores del siglo xix. Con una enorme capacidad de trabajo, parece que en una ocasión llegó a afirmar: «¡Lo ilustraré todo!». Con quince años Doré consiguió un contrato con el litógrafo y periodista francés Charles Philipon, editor de dos revistas satíricas, para publicar un litografía a la semana. Ilustró grandes clásicos como La Divina Comedia de Dante, Don Quijote de la Mancha de Cervantes, Las fábulas de La Fontaine, Gargantúa y Pantagruel de Rabelais, Cuentos droláticos de Balzac, El cuervo de Allan Poe, obras de Byron Los grabados de Doré, gracias a su fantasía pero también a su vertiente de cronista social o las escenas de viajes, han pasado a las generaciones posteriores como la gran referencia de la imagen clásica.
